Bargarh, Mar 25: Odisha Vigilance sleuths on Tuesday arrested the Panchayat Executive Officer (PEO) of Gyan Gram Panchayat in Padampur block of Odisha’s Bargarh district and her husband for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a complainant.
The accused have been identified as PEO Nupur Seth and her husband Bed Prakash Biswal.
As per reports, Nupur had demanded Rs 10,000 from a complainant to shortlist an eligible person as a beneficiary under the PMAY scheme.
However, the complainant expressed his inability to pay the bribe. Despite repeated requests, Nupur did not refrain from her demands and later reduced the amount to Rs 5,000 after negotiation.
Left out with no other option, the complainant reported the matter to Vigilance authorities. Acting swiftly on it, the officials laid a trap and caught Seth and her husband red-handed while accepting the bribe.
The sleuths have arrested both the accused and recovered the entire bribe amount from their possession before seizing it.
Following the apprehension, Vigilance sleuths launched simultaneous searches at two locations associated with Nupur to investigate the disproportionate assets angle.
A case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, and an investigation into the matter is underway, said an official.
