New Delhi, Apr 4: The Budget Session of Parliament, which began on January 31 has officially come to a close with both Houses being adjourned sine die on Friday. Both houses will now reconvene during the Monsoon session of Parliament.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, during his valedictory remark in the 267th session of the upper house, extended his gratitude towards the members of the house for their "active participation and valuable contribution."
When the Lok Sabha reconvened at 12 noon after a brief adjournment due to remarks made by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla delivered his valedictory address before adjourning the House sine die.
Birla highlighted that 16 bills were passed during the session, and the House's productivity was recorded at over 118 percent.
As Birla spoke, opposition members raised slogans in protest against his comments regarding Gandhi's statement. She had criticized the handling of the Waqf amendment Bill, claiming it was passed without adequate discussion. Birla had termed her remarks as "unfortunate" and a breach of the House's dignity.
Throughout the session, the government successfully completed its budgetary process, with the Lok Sabha approving the demands for grants from various ministries as well as the Finance Bill. The budget for Manipur, which is under central rule, was also passed.
The Waqf amendment bill, which sparked a heated confrontation between the government and the opposition, was eventually passed by Parliament after the two Houses extended their sittings for extended hours to clear the legislation.
