Mumbai, January 2: In a significant move to emphasize constitutional values, the Maharashtra Government has decided on the reading of the Constitution's preamble in schools across the state on the upcoming Republic Day, January 26. This directive comes amidst an ongoing political tussle between the ruling and opposition parties over alleged disrespect to the Constitution.

Announcing the decision after a cabinet meeting, State School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse stated that the reading of the preamble would become a permanent feature of Republic Day celebrations in schools.

“In addition to the usual cultural programs organized every Republic Day, schools will now include the reading of the Constitution’s preamble as part of the festivities. Clear instructions will be issued to all schools to ensure compliance,” Bhuse said.

To further instill a sense of patriotism, schools have been directed to organize at least eight activities with a nationalistic theme. These include a Prabhat Pheri (morning march) following the flag hoisting ceremony, as well as competitions in elocution, poetry, dance, drawing, essay writing, and sports, along with themed exhibitions.

During the recent Parliament session, opposition parties demanded a special discussion on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution’s adoption, further fueling debates about its sanctity.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis criticized the opposition, accusing them of disrespecting constitutional institutions. “These leaders show a lack of trust in democratic institutions like the Election Commission, Supreme Court, RBI, and CAG. Their actions demonstrate a disregard for the Constitution crafted by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar,” Fadnavis asserted.

By integrating the preamble into Republic Day celebrations, the Maharashtra Government hopes to inspire a renewed commitment to the values enshrined in the Constitution.
