Mumbai, July 5: India's equity indices opened in the red on Friday due to profit booking in large-cap stocks. By 9:50 a.m., the Sensex had dropped 510 points, or 0.64 percent, to 79,538, and the Nifty had fallen 88 points, or 0.36 percent, to 24,214.
Despite this, broader markets are trending upward. On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), 1,213 shares are in the green, while 1,001 shares are in the red. There is buying interest in small-cap and mid-cap stocks. The Nifty Midcap 100 index is up 60 points, or 0.11 percent, at 56,679, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index is up 47 points, or 0.25 percent, at 18,840.
In the Sensex pack, HUL, L&T, JSW Steel, Wipro, Sun Pharma, NTPC, and SBI are the top gainers. Meanwhile, HDFC Bank, M&M, Tata Steel, Titan, Power Grid, and Bajaj Finance are the top losers.
Banking stocks are leading the market decline, with the Nifty Bank down more than 700 points.
