Supreme Court delegation in Manipur

Imphal, March 23: A delegation of Supreme Court judges, currently visiting Manipur, attended the duodecennial celebrations in Imphal on Sunday. The event saw Supreme Court Judge Justice BR Gavai inaugurating the Secretariat of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur, along with other court buildings and related projects.

During the event, the delegation of judges met and engaged with various officials. On Saturday, a five-member delegation led by Justice BR Gavai arrived in Imphal, which included Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, MM Sundresh, KV Viswanathan, and N Kotishwar. As part of their visit, the delegation also visited a relief camp in Churachandpur, Manipur.

In addition to the visit, Justice BR Gavai, who is also the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), inaugurated legal services camps and medical camps in all districts of Manipur. He also launched new legal aid clinics in Imphal East, Imphal West, and Ukhrul districts.

Speaking after the inauguration, Justice Gavai emphasized the importance of justice and access to healthcare, reassuring the people of Manipur. “We are here for this event to transform legal aid for the benefit of the community. The principle of justice and access to healthcare are vital. I, along with my team, assure you that we stand with you. It’s our collective responsibility to work together for the betterment of society. The entire nation will unite to help resolve these challenges,” he said.

The visit comes after President's Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13, under Article 356 of the Constitution, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The region has been gripped by violence since May 3, 2023, between the Hindu Meitei community and the tribal Kuki, who are predominantly Christian. The violence began after a rally organized by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM), and the situation escalated, prompting the deployment of paramilitary forces to restore order.
