Washington, Jan 27: Indian families living in the U.S. on temporary visas are in a state of panic following President Trump’s recent order that aims to limit birthright citizenship.
With the new rule set to take effect on February 19, many are rushing to ensure their children are born before the deadline, triggering medical, ethical, and legal concerns.
The order, which restricts automatic citizenship to children born to U.S. citizens and Green Card holders, excludes children born to parents on temporary visas like H-1B or L1.
This rule has led some Indian families, particularly those on work visas, to explore the possibility of having early C-sections in an effort to give birth before the law is enforced.
However, the move is raising alarms within the medical community. Dr. Avinash Gupta, a prominent physician with the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), strongly advises against elective early C-sections that aren’t medically necessary. He warns that such procedures could lead to significant health risks for mothers and babies.
