Mumbai, AP 4: Veteran actor-director Manoj Kumar died on Friday at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. He was 87.
He was popular for playing patriotic roles and was, referred to as 'Bharat Kumar'. Though he retired as an actor in 1999, his movies are still popular today among young viewers.
He was awarded numerous high-profile awards for his remarkable achievements in Indian cinema. He was awarded a National Film Award and was given the Padma Shri in 1992. In 2015, he received Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his outstanding work in films and the arts.
Among his most famous films, Purab Aur Paschim, showing the contrast between the way of life in the East and in the West, was a huge hit in India and internationally. Yaadgaar, Pehchan, and Mera Naam Joker were some of his best-known films which came out in 1970.
Manoj Kumar was born Harikrishna Giri Goswami on 24th July 1937. He is best remembered as being one of the major stars of Hindi films and as an actor who employed his films to advance patriotic values.
