London, July 4: Indian tennis icon Rohan Bopanna and his Australian teammate Matthew Ebden sailed into the second round of the men's doubles of the Wimbledon beating their Dutch opponents Robin Haas and Sander Arends 7-5, 6-4.
The match lasted an hour and 11 minutes in a rain-interrupted match. Bopanna-Ebden, the second seeds, who are the current Australian Open champions, will face Germany’s Hendrik Jebens and Constantin Frantzen in the second round, the fixture revealed.
Worth mentioning that the Indo-Australian pair had reached the semifinals of the season’s third Grand Slam last year.
In another match of the Wimbledon on Wednesday, the another Indian in the tournament Sumit Nagal and his Serbian partner Dusan Lajovic were ousted in the first round by Spaniards Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar.
However, apart from Bopanna and Nagal, there are two more Indians who too would be testing their fortunes in the tournament. Both N Sriram Balaji and Yuki Bhambri will play their matches later Thursday.
The fixture reveals that Balaji will partner Britain's Luke Johnson and will face fourth seeds Mate Pavic of Serbia and Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador. Similarly, Bhambri and France’s Albano Olivetti will take on the Kazakh duo of Alexander Bublik and Alexander Shevchenko.
But rain is likely to intervene the matches as per weather forecasts. Already the Bopanna-Ebden's first round match was also interrupted by rain.
