Bhubaneswar, April 2: A total of 391 people and 27 elephants lost their lives due to electrocution in Odisha over the past five financial years, informed Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo on Wednesday.
Singh Deo informed the state assembly that the electrocution fatalities occurred within the service areas of four power distribution companies in the state during the period from 2020-21 to 2024-25.
The highest number of electrocution deaths was reported in the area of Tata Power Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL), where 178 people, including employees, and 17 elephants were electrocuted, according to Singh Deo.
Additionally, 106 human fatalities and 9 elephant deaths due to electrocution were reported in the area covered by TP North Odisha Distribution Limited (TPNODL). In the TP South Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL) area, 91 people and one elephant died from electrocution, while 16 people lost their lives in the TP Central Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL) area during the same period.
Singh Deo, who holds the Energy portfolio, also mentioned that the government has taken disciplinary action against 107 officials deemed responsible for these tragic incidents.
