In a significant development that underscores the evolving geopolitical landscape, Armenia has emerged as India's largest arms importer. This burgeoning defence partnership, fueled by Armenia's growing distrust of its traditional ally, Russia, has seen India supply a diverse range of military hardware, including advanced missile systems, surveillance aircraft, and a variety of other critical equipment, amounting to a staggering $2 billion in defence deals.

Armenia, a small nation nestled in the Caucasus region, has long relied on Russia for its defence needs. However, the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war with Azerbaijan exposed cracks in this alliance, as Armenia felt let down by Russia's perceived lack of support. This disillusionment prompted Armenia to seek alternative defence partners, leading to a strategic shift towards India.

India: A rising arms exporter

India's defence exports have reached record levels in recent years, driven by its growing expertise in indigenous arms manufacturing and its pursuit of strategic partnerships with nations seeking reliable and cost-effective defence solutions. The partnership with Armenia exemplifies this trend, with India supplying a wide range of advanced weaponry to bolster Armenia's defence capabilities.

Key defence deals:

  • Pinaka Multi-Launch rocket system: This indigenously developed rocket system, known for its accuracy and range, enhances Armenia's artillery capabilities, particularly in the mountainous terrain of the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
  • Akash-1S air Defence missile system: Armenia has placed a $720 million order for 15 Akash-1S systems, marking the first international sale of this advanced air defence system. This acquisition will significantly bolster Armenia's ability to defend against aerial threats, including fighter aircraft, missiles, and drones.
  • Dornier-228 surveillance aircraft: The supply of Dornier-228 aircraft enhances Armenia's reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities, allowing for better monitoring and control of its airspace.

In addition to these major systems, India has also provided Armenia with a range of other military hardware, including anti-tank guided rockets, bullet-proof jackets, night-vision goggles, artillery, ammunition, small arms, and advanced weapon-locating radars. These supplies collectively contribute to modernizing Armenia's defence capabilities and enhancing its ability to counter potential threats.

Strategic partnership worth $2 billion

The growing defence partnership between India and Armenia signifies a shift in regional alliances and reflects India's growing prominence as a global arms exporter. This collaboration, valued at $2 billion, not only strengthens Armenia's defence capabilities but also fosters closer diplomatic ties between the two nations. As Armenia seeks to diversify its defence partnerships and reduce its reliance on Russia, India has emerged as a reliable and strategic ally, contributing to regional stability and security.
