New Delhi, April 24: Locals in Amritsar have praised the decision of the Indian government to shut the Attari Integrated Check Post (ICP), among other diplomatic measures in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir.
A local business owner condemned the recent terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, calling it "wrong" and expressing solidarity with Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. “We stand with the nation and support PM Modi’s decisions,” he said.
A tourist said that they had come to Amritsar with the hopes of crossing through the border to attend a family wedding in Pakistan, but now the plans have been postponed. "I was going to Pakistan today for my brother's wedding, but it will be postponed now. My grandmother and her four sons stay in Pakistan, and her one son stays in India. The attack on tourists (in Pahalgam) was very wrong," he said.
The brutal attack, which took place in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baisaran meadow on Tuesday, claimed 26 lives and is considered the deadliest since the 2019 Pulwama strike that killed 40 CRPF personnel.
In response, the Indian government has taken firm diplomatic steps—shutting down the Attari Integrated Check Post (ICP), limiting diplomatic staff in both India and Pakistan to 30, and suspending the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme. Pakistani nationals in India under SVES visas have been given 48 hours to leave. (With Agency Input)
