Bhubaneswar, Nov 26: The bypoll for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Odisha is scheduled for December 20. The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a notification regarding the election today.
The seat became vacant after Sujeet Kumar resigned on September 6, 2024, from both his position in the Rajya Sabha and his membership in the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). Kumar, whose term was set to end on April 2, 2026, later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Voting will take place on December 20 between 9 AM and 4 PM, with vote counting to follow at 5 PM on the same day.
According to the ECI's notification, the important dates for the bypoll are as follows:
- Last date for filing nominations: December 10, 2024 (Tuesday)
- Scrutiny of nominations: December 11, 2024 (Wednesday)
- Last date for withdrawal of candidatures: December 13, 2024 (Friday)
- Date of Poll: December 20, 2024 (Friday)
- Polling hours: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
- Counting of Votes: December 20, 2024 (Friday) at 5:00 PM
