Nagpur, March 23: The curfew in Nagpur has been lifted, and restrictions have been eased in the last four affected areas, authorities confirmed on Sunday. According to Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal, restrictions in Kotwali, Tehsil, Ganeshpeth, and Yashodhara Nagar were relaxed starting at 3 PM on Sunday after a review by law enforcement agencies.
Earlier, on Saturday, the curfew was lifted in the areas of Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Lakadganj, Sakkardara, and Imamwada. Additionally, restrictions were temporarily eased between 7 PM and 10 PM in Kotwali, Tehsil, and Ganeshpeth.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated on Saturday that any damage caused during the violent clashes in Nagpur on March 17 would be recovered from the rioters. At a press conference, Fadnavis emphasized, "Any damage caused will be recovered from the rioters. If they fail to pay, their property will be sold for recovery. In some cases, bulldozers will also be used."
Hamid Engineer, the working president of the Minorities Democratic Party, was arrested late on Friday night in connection with the violence.
In a related development, the Nagpur Court ordered a medical examination for Fahim Khan, the prime accused in the violence case, after he claimed to have been mistreated by the police. Khan’s magisterial custody remand (MCR) was recorded, and the court reserved the right for a police custody remand (PCR). As of now, Nagpur Police Commissioner Singal confirmed that 99 individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence, assuring that the investigation would be impartial. "So far, 99 arrests have been made, and action is being taken. We are conducting a fair and unbiased investigation," Singal told reporters.
