New Delhi, February 25: The Delhi government incurred cumulative losses exceeding Rs 2,000 crore as a result of its 2021-2022 excise policy, primarily due to a flawed policy framework and poor implementation, according to a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) presented in the assembly on Tuesday.

The report, one of 14 audits of the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's performance, was tabled by the new administration led by Rekha Gupta. It highlighted several irregularities in issuing liquor licenses. It noted that recommendations from an expert panel formed to suggest changes to the controversial policy were disregarded by then Deputy Chief Minister and Excise Minister Manish Sisodia.

The report, which investigates the alleged liquor scam—a significant issue during the election campaign—revealed a revenue loss of Rs 941.53 crore, attributing it to the failure to obtain necessary permissions for opening liquor outlets in “non-conforming municipal wards.”
