Diarrhea outbreak in Bhubaneswar: Over 160 affected, authorities spring into action

Bhubaneswar, April 16: A major outbreak of diarrhea has been reported in Ward No. 13 of Bhubaneswar, specifically in the Neelamadhab Nibas, triggering swift action from health and civic authorities. So far, 162 people have been affected by the waterborne disease, with 12 individuals receiving medical treatment on Wednesday, officials confirmed.

Following the outbreak, a high-level team comprising administrative officials, health personnel, and civic representatives reached the affected locality. Additional Urban Public Health Officer Dr. Neelamani Senapati arrived at the Chandrasekharpur Medical Office, while Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das also visited the area to take stock of the situation.

A mobile medical unit from the Health Department has been providing treatment on-site, distributing medicines, and referring severely ill patients to nearby hospitals. Several patients have been admitted to the Niladri Vihar Government Health Center and Capital Hospital for further treatment.

Despite the steps being taken, locals expressed strong dissatisfaction during the Mayor’s visit. Angry residents surrounded the Mayor, demanding immediate improvements in sanitation and alleging poor maintenance of hygiene in the locality.

The Mayor assured that drinking water is now being supplied safely and added that contractors are responsible for operating the water pumps. Surveillance measures are ongoing, and authorities have vowed to take all necessary steps to contain the outbreak.
