Rajpura, December 8: Amid escalating tensions at the Punjab-Haryana border, farmer leaders and police officials from both states convened in Rajpura to address ongoing concerns related to the 'Dilli Chalo' march. The meeting, attended by prominent farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, was marked by what officials described as a "positive atmosphere."
DIG Patiala Mandeep Singh Sidhu noted, “A very detailed discussion took place with the farmers... Future talks are also planned.” Similarly, Ambala DC Parth Gupta expressed optimism, saying, “Efforts are being made to find a solution.” SSP Patiala Nanak Singh echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of continued dialogue.
'Jatha' Called Off Amid Clashes
A contingent of 101 farmers participating in the march was called off on Sunday after clashes left several injured, including one farmer in serious condition. Sarwan Singh Pandher explained, “We have decided to withdraw the 'jatha' for today due to injuries sustained by our members. One farmer is in serious condition and has been admitted to PGI, while 8-9 others are injured.”
Pandher criticized the government’s handling of the protests, accusing it of misinformation and a lack of genuine dialogue. “The government has deployed all resources to stop us instead of resolving the issue,” he said.
Border Tensions Escalate
At the Shambhu border, the situation grew tense as Haryana Police used tear gas to disperse protesting farmers. DSP Shahabad Ramkumar stated, “We instructed the farmers to maintain peace and move forward only after obtaining permission. However, they disagreed.” Drone footage revealed police blocking the farmers’ advance, leading to a verbal altercation between the two sides.
Farmer leaders have announced a reassessment meeting scheduled for tomorrow, with further updates to be shared in a press conference. The protests continue to highlight the standoff between farmers and the government, as efforts for resolution remain inconclusive.
