Dhenkanal/Kendrapara, Oct 15: Dhenkanal and Kendrapara towns are buzzing with preparations for the much-awaited Gajalaxmi Puja. Special arrangements have been made to welcome the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity tomorrow. The festivities will commence on the auspicious day of Kumar Purnima.
In Dhenkanal, idol makers are putting the finishing touches on intricate Laxmi idols, while mandaps are being adorned with impressive tableaus, grand gates, and decorative lights for the 11-day celebration. The atmosphere is vibrant as residents prepare for the festivities.
Kendrapara is also gearing up for the Gajalaxmi Puja, set to kick off on Wednesday. Numerous pandals have been constructed in key locations, including Duhuria, Tini Muhani, Law College Chhak, and both the new and old bus stands.
The Gajalaxmi Puja will last for 11 days in Dhenkanal and seven days in Kendrapara, attracting participation from people of all religions, castes, and tribes. This annual celebration has become a cherished tradition, drawing thousands from across the state to partake in the festivities.
Dhenkanal's history of Laxmi Puja spans over 50 years, with around 38 puja pandals dedicated to the worship of Goddess Gajalaxmi. The city transforms into a cultural hub, showcasing dazzling decorations, food stalls, and vibrant markets that highlight Odisha's rich cultural heritage. Visitors can also enjoy soulful music and dance performances, adding to the festive spirit.
As Kartik Purnima approaches, cultural shows featuring Odissi dance, lively folk performances, and traditional games like Puchi Khela will entertain devotees.
The celebrations will culminate on the Bisarjan or immersion day, marked by a spectacular display of fireworks, the blowing of conchs, and the beating of drums, accompanied by devotional songs. Devotees will then carry the Laxmi idols to a river for immersion, symbolizing her return to the heavenly realm.
