Bhubaneswar: The first heat wave of the 2025 summer will grip Odisha from March 13 onwards.
A majority of model forecasts predict 38/40 deg C day time temperature sweeping many districts in the State up to March 19. Weather will likely to cool down from March 20 onwards.

As per the model forecasts of ace weather organisations such as IMD, NCMRWF, NCEP-GFS and ECMWF, while strong easterlies prevailing currently over south Bay of Bengal and peninsular India bringing rain there, dry westerlies will prevail over north, northwest and central India, and extending upto eastern states like Odisha.

- A fresh western disturbance likely to effect northwest India from night of March 12th
- A cyclonic circulation over northwest Rajasthan and neighbourhood persists
- As a result of influx of dry westerlies Gujarat to sizzle at 40 deg C from March 12
- Rajasthan will also be under heat wave sweep from March 12
- Heat wave to grip some parts of west Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Odisha from March 13 onwards.
HEAT WAVE IN ODISHA
A glance at the models of ECMWF, IMD-GFS and NCMRWF – NCUM shows that as many as 13 districts in Odisha may see maximum temperature touching 40deg C on March 13. The districts are:
- Kalahandi
- Nuapada
- Balangir
- Bargarh
- Jharsuguda
- Sambalpur
- Sundargarh
- Deogarh
- Angul
- Subarnapur
- Boudh
- Kandhamal (38 deg C)
- Parts of Keonjhar (38degC)
The model forecasts show maximum temperature in many of the districts given below crossing 40 deg c on March 15 and 16.

HEAT WAVE IN BHUBANESWAR – CUTTACK
A glance at the model forecast of IMD-GFS and ECMWF shows the following.
- IMD-GFS predicts near 40 degC maximum temperature for Bhubaneswar-Cuttack on March 12
- The model forecasts show heat conditions in the twin cities prevailing till March 18.
HEAT WAVE ON HOLI DAY IN ODISHA
A glance at the model forecasts of IMD, NCEP-GFSand ECMWF shows the following
- Western Odisha will be sizzling at around 41 deg C
- Rest of the districts to record day time temperature of around 38-40 deg C
- State Capital Bhubaneswar may record 39/40 deg C
- Cuttack city will also record around 40 deg C
- Central Odisha districts like Angul, Dhenkanal may record over 40 deg C max temperature.
WEATHER TWIST
An analysis of model forecasts such as NCUM, IMD-GFS, ECMWF and NCEP-GFS shows that under the influence of strong eatserlies a cyclonic circulation will form over east central Bay of Bengal.
As a consequence, easterlies will gush into Odisha bringing rain from March 19 onwards.
All model forecasts agree on good rainfall across the State on March 20/21.
As per IMD forecast, state Capital Bhubaneswar may record 7mm rain on March 19/20.
Cuttack may record some rainfall on May 20.
NCUM model forecast predicts 2-4mm rain in western Odisha districts on March 21.
