Kolkota , October 26:  The dense mangrove forests of the Sundarbans in West Bengal have once again proven their invaluable role as natural protectors against cyclones, this time with Cyclone Dana.

Located in the South and North 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal, this mangrove belt acted as a natural “speed breaker,” absorbing much of the cyclone's force and reducing its impact on the coastal communities.

Environmental experts emphasize that the thick mangrove vegetation significantly slows wind speeds by creating friction, effectively acting as a barrier.  The trees also absorb wave energy, diminishing the intensity of storm surges and safeguarding local habitats.

Additionally, these mangroves anchor the shoreline, with roots stabilizing the soil, reducing erosion, and sequestering carbon, contributing to climate change mitigation.

Environmental activist highlighted that mangroves play a critical role in “water attenuation” and “water filtration.” By absorbing water energy, they minimize the storm surge’s impact, while filtering out sediments, pollutants, and excess salts.

Following repeated cyclonic threats, the Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS) initiated “Project Green Warriors” in 2007.

Initially covering only 50 hectares in three villages, the project expanded significantly after Cyclone Aila in 2009, which had minimal impact on the areas with restored mangroves. Between 2010 and 2015, with efforts from over 18,000 local women, the project planted mangroves across approximately 4,600 hectares, spanning 183 villages, enhancing the region’s resilience against future cyclones.

Cyclone Dana serves as yet another reminder of the mangrove belt’s critical role as a natural defense system for coastal regions vulnerable to climate-induced calamities.
