Bengaluru, March 13: In a major milestone for India’s space exploration efforts, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed the undocking of its Space Docking Experiment (Spadex) modules. This accomplishment represents a significant advancement in India’s space technology, bringing the nation closer to executing more complex space missions, including the development of future space stations.

Launched on December 30, 2024, aboard PSLV-C60, ISRO’s Spadex mission was designed to test the docking capabilities of two spacecraft in orbit—a feat achieved by only a few countries. On January 16, 2025, the two satellites, SDX-1 and SDX-2, successfully docked, making India the fourth nation in the world—after the USA, Russia, and China—to accomplish this challenging maneuver.

After several weeks in a docked configuration, ISRO engineers executed a carefully orchestrated undocking process. The sequence involved extending SDX-2 to create separation, releasing Capture Lever 3 as planned, disengaging the Capture Lever on SDX-2, and issuing the final decapture command for both SDX-1 and SDX-2, ensuring a smooth, controlled separation.

With the successful completion of these steps, the Spadex modules were undocked, a moment ISRO celebrated as a "spectacular success" on social media. Stunning visuals of the undocking were captured by both spacecraft, offering a rare glimpse of this significant achievement.

The success of Spadex represents a giant leap forward for India’s space program. It enables ISRO to develop critical technologies for future space advancements, including the potential construction of Indian space stations, in-orbit satellite repairs, and even human space missions. This achievement further solidifies India’s position in the global space exploration arena.

With this triumph, India has once again showcased its growing expertise in advanced space operations, opening the door for even more ambitious missions in the years to come.
