Nuapada, Mar14: In a remarkable act of generosity, 95-year-old philanthropist Sabitri Majhi has donated five acres of land in Singajhar village to establish a dedicated playground. The village, known for hosting the prestigious inter-state Budharaja Cricket Cup, has long struggled with the lack of a permanent sports ground, forcing locals to refurbish private lands annually for tournaments.
For over five decades, Singajhar has been a hub for cricket, football, and kabaddi, drawing players from Raipur, Bilaspur, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Jharkhand. A passionate supporter of sports, Majhi hopes her donation will help nurture young talent and provide athletes with a proper platform to hone their skills.
Encouraged by her gesture, villagers are now urging the government to develop a stadium on the donated land to further support local sports. Majhi, who has previously donated land for schools and a temple, expressed her joy in contributing to the community. "Seeing children play and succeed gives me immense happiness," she said.
Her selfless act has been widely lauded, with many considering it a significant step toward fostering sports culture in the region.
