New Delhi, Dec 5: Justice Manmohan was sworn in as the new judge of the Supreme Court. Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, administered the oath in the first court, with all sitting judges present to witness the event.
The Central Government had officially appointed Justice Manmohan, the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, as a Supreme Court judge on December 3.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his elevation on November 23, highlighting his seniority in the judiciary. With his appointment, the Supreme Court now comprises 33 judges, one short of its full strength of 34.
Justice Manmohan ranks second in the national seniority list of High Court judges and is the most senior judge of the Delhi High Court. The Collegium took into account that the Supreme Court bench currently had only one representative from the Delhi High Court, further underscoring his suitability for the role.
Born on December 17, 1962, Justice Manmohan is the son of Jagmohan Malhotra, a former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and the former Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. He was designated a senior advocate by the Delhi High Court in 2003 and appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in 2008.
He became a permanent judge in 2009 and served as the Acting Chief Justice in November 2023 before assuming full charge as Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in September 2023.
