Bhubaneswar, March 26: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi attacked the Opposition on Wednesday, accusing them of intentionally obstructing Assembly proceedings. He dismissed allegations of deteriorating law and order in the state.
During the discussion on the Home and General Administration Department's demand, Majhi condemned the Opposition for repeatedly disrupting the House over alleged crimes against women and girls. He argued that while the opposition accused the government of rising crimes, the official statistics clearly show the government’s strict measures against such crimes.
Majhi highlighted a reduction in crime rates, citing a 7.4% decrease in murders compared to the previous year. He also pointed out a 4.7% drop in cases of minor rape and a 1.7% decrease in general rape cases.
Reaffirming his government’s commitment to maintaining law and order, Majhi stressed the importance of women's safety, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus on the issue. He assured that the government prioritizes key cases, ensuring fast investigations and higher conviction rates.
He emphasized his administration's "zero tolerance" policy, noting the accelerated pace of investigations and legal proceedings, leading to more convictions.
Additionally, Majhi pointed out a significant decline in crimes against women and children under his government compared to the previous administration, along with a reduction in Left-Wing Extremism and advancements in police modernization.
He also highlighted the Odisha Police’s success against Maoists, reporting the killing of six Maoists, the arrest of eight, and 24 Maoist surrenders in 2024.
