Bhubaneswar, April 16: Professor Digambar Mishra, a distinguished academic and respected community leader, passed away in Birmingham, USA, at the age of 87. He had been a resident of Birmingham for over five decades, dedicating his life to education, leadership, and social service.
Born on May 8, 1938, in Kamalpur village, Odisha, Dr. Mishra’s journey from rural India to becoming a prominent scholar in the United States stands as a remarkable testament to his dedication, intellect, and perseverance.
He completed his post-graduate studies in Political Science from Utkal University in 1967. In 1975, he earned a Master’s in Public Administration and a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Alabama. His academic career flourished as he inspired generations of students with his passion, critical thinking, and commitment to excellence.
Dr. Mishra served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Political Science at Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama, leaving an enduring legacy in the field of education. His leadership extended beyond the classroom; from 1991 to 1993, he served as President of the Odisha Society of the Americas (OSA), strengthening cultural ties and community engagement among the Odia diaspora.
His passing has cast a deep sense of loss across many communities. Dr. Mishra is survived by his wife, son, daughter-in-law, daughter, son-in-law, and three beloved grandchildren.
He will be remembered not only for his academic contributions but also for the inspiration he provided through a life devoted to learning, service, and leadership.
