New Delhi, March 3: A recent survey has revealed that India is home to over 6,300 river dolphins, marking the first comprehensive population estimation of these aquatic mammals.
According to the report published by the government on Monday, the dolphins inhabit the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Indus River systems.
The Ganges River dolphin, renowned for its distinctive characteristics, is primarily found in the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna river basin and its tributaries, which span across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan.
Additionally, a smaller population of the Indus River dolphin, which is closely related to the Ganges River dolphin, resides in the Indus River system in India.
