PM Modi meets Sri Lanka's Tamil Community, promise to support for progress

Colombo, April 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Sri Lanka's Tamil community leaders on Saturday, offering condolences over the passing of Tamil leaders R. Sambanthan and Mavai Senathirajah.

 During the meeting, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to ensuring equality, dignity, and justice for the Tamil community in a united Sri Lanka. He expressed, "Meeting with the leaders of Sri Lanka's Tamil community is always a joy, and I personally conveyed my sorrow over the loss of these respected leaders."

PM Modi further emphasized India's dedication to contributing to the social, economic, and cultural progress of the Tamil community, highlighting several projects launched during his visit. Mavai Senathirajah and R. Sampanthan were prominent political figures, with Senathirajah leading the ITAK and Sampanthan heading the Tamil National Alliance until their recent deaths.

Following the meeting, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared on X, "PM Modi met Tamil leaders from Northern and Eastern provinces, reaffirming India’s ongoing commitment to their well-being."

Earlier, PM Modi also met Sri Lanka’s Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa, discussing ways to strengthen India-Sri Lanka ties. PM Modi praised Premadasa’s role in fostering friendship between the nations and stressed the importance of bipartisan support for their partnership.

This marks PM Modi's first visit to Sri Lanka since 2019. He arrived in Colombo on Friday and was warmly welcomed with a historic ceremony at Independence Square, a first for Sri Lanka. PM Modi’s trip follows his participation in the BIMSTEC Summit in Thailand. ( Agency Input)
