Bhubaneswar, December 22: Odisha is bracing for a wet Christmas this year as a new low-pressure area is likely to develop in the west-central Bay of Bengal. According to meteorologist Uma Sankar Das, the low-pressure system may trigger rainfall across the state starting December 24.
Das, via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, noted that the active low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is expected to shift west-southwestwards, nearing the southwest Bay of Bengal and the coasts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh by December 24. This development is set to induce sea winds laden with moisture to move into Odisha, causing cloudy skies and rainfall in south and north coastal districts.
The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) regional center in Bhubaneswar has forecast no rainfall until 8:30 am on Monday. However, from 8:30 am Monday to 8:30 am on December 25, light to moderate rain is likely in several districts, including:
December 24-25: Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Khurda, Puri, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, and Balasore.
December 25-26: Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Khurda, Cuttack, Puri, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, and Balasore.
