Bhubaneswar: Odisha swimmers Mannata Mishra and Shristi Upadhyaya created new national records in 100m breaststroke and 100m butterfly events respectively in the short course KNZ Provincial Championship held at Durban, South Africa.
Mannata clocked 1:12.90 sec in the 100m breaststroke open event and bagged a bronze medal. The 17-year Mannata is the youngest in the State to create a new national record.
Earlier the record was set by Chahat Arora in the 100m breaststroke with 1:13.13 sec at the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre’s 25m short course pool in the year 2022..
Mannata also won two more medals at Durban, she grabbed gold medal in the relay event and a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke event.
Similarly, Shristi Upadhyaya scrapped the national record in the women's 100m butterfly event by clocking 1:02.53 sec. The old NR timings were 1:02.78 sec.
The Swimming Federation of India congratulating both the Odisha swimmers expressed “congratulations to the Indian swimmers winning laurels at the short course KNZ Provincial Championships in South Africa. Special mention for Mannata Mishra and Shristi Upadhyay for clocking new best Indian times (short course) in their respective events”.
