Columbo, AP 5: Sri Lanka bestowed its highest civilian honour, the Mithra Vibhushana, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who asserted that it encapsulates the historic relations and strong friendship between both countries.
The honour was created in 2008, the former president of the Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and the former president of the Palestinian authority, Yasser Arafat. Modi received the honour from President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at an event held at the presidential secretariat in Colombo.
“It is an honour for me to be awarded the Sri Lanka Mithra Vibhushana by president Dissanayake,” said Modi while also acknowledging it was an honour for 1.4 billion Indians.
The recipient is issued a citation and a silver medal to be worn around the neck, gemstone studded and containing nine variations of Sri Lankan gems, along with representations of a lotus, globe, sun, moon, and sheaves of rice.
The Dharma Chakra depicted on the medal represents the common Buddhist heritage which has shaped the cultural traditions of both countries. The Pun Kalasa, or ceremonial pot showcased with the sheaves of rice, represents prosperity and regeneration.
Modi has been awarded state honors from over 15 countries, including the Order of King Abdul Aziz from Saudi Arabia; the Order of the State of Palestine; the Order of Zayed from the United Arab Emirates; the Order of Fiji; and the Order of the Nile from Egypt.
Last month, during Modi's visit to the nation for national day celebrations, Mauritius presented him the country's top civilian award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean.
