Gir Somnath, Mar 3: On occasion of World Wildlife Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today visited Gujarat’s Gir National Park and took a lion safari to capture glimpses of Asiatic lions.
Taking to his official ‘X’ handle, PM Modi shared some of his pictures from the lion safari and wrote, “This morning, on #WorldWildlifeDay, I went on a Safari in Gir, which, as we all know, is home to the majestic Asiatic Lion. Coming to Gir also brings back many memories of the work we collectively did when I was serving as Gujarat CM. In the last many years, collective efforts have ensured that the population of Asiatic Lions is rising steadily. Equally commendable is the role of tribal communities and women from surrounding areas in preserving the habitat of the Asiatic Lion.”

The theme of this year's ‘World Wildlife Day’ is “Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet” and it highlights the significance of sustainable funding and active community participation in conservation efforts.
Notably, Gujarat is home to the world's last remaining Asiatic lions and has made remarkable progress in protecting these endangered creatures and preserving the region's rich biodiversity. Today, Asiatic lions roam freely across 30,000 square kilometers, spanning 53 talukas in nine districts of the state.
The state government has also established a National Referral Centre for Wildlife across 20.24 hectares in Junagadh. Additionally, a high-tech wildlife monitoring center and a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital in Sasan have been set up to provide advanced care for these endangered species.
