Sambalpur, Nov 18: In a tragic incident, as many as three elephants including a calf were killed in Odisha’s Sambalpur forest on Monday.
The incident has been reported from the Nakitideul area under the Burmal Forest Range spread shock waves among the forest fraternities and environmentalists.
Though the reason behind the death of elephants is yet to be ascertained, electric trap, set for poaching boars or to keep the straying elephants away from paddy crops, is suspected to kill the pachyderms.
Sources said the locals of the Naktideul area discovered three elephant carcasses in the forest and informed the range officials. Forest team rushed to the spot recovered the bodies and instituted an investigation.
Primary investigation revealed that a powercable charged with electric current found strangled all three jumboes.
Further investigation into the matter is underway. The offenders will be stringently punished. Even the forest officials found responsible for it will never spared said PCCF(Wildlife) Susanta Nanda.
