Bhubaneswar, Sep 2: Odisha has seen a rapid increase in economic offence cases in 2021, said the report released this week by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The number of economic offences reported to the police has increased up to 52 per cent in the year as compared to 2020 despite the Covid lockdown. Besides, police failed to submit charge sheets in over 40 per cent of cases. The police have submitted charge sheets in 56.6 per cent of cases in 2021. According to the NCRB data, as many as 4,329 economic offence cases were registered by Odisha police in 2019. The state reported 4,028 cases in 2020 which increased to 6,115 in 2021. However, the police managed to submit charge sheet of 1911 cases in 2021 as against charge sheet of 1195 cases filed in 2020. While the police investigation is on into 6,115 cases of 2021, the investigation into 4899 cases registered before it has been pending. Odisha police have transferred one cyber fraud case to another state for investigation and 135 cases have been closed as they were found fake during interrogation. Police have also closed the probe of 1359 cases following legal complicacies and fake data. Similarly, 886 fraud cases were closed as police did not find sufficient evidence and data relating to the cases.
