Bhubaneswar, Feb 17: The Commissionerate Police on Monday arrested the alleged boyfriend of Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student from Nepal who reportedly committed suicide at the hostel campus of a private university in Bhubaneswar.
The accused has been identified as Advik Srivastava, a third-year Mechanical Engineering student at the University. He was arrested from the university.
“The accused has been arrested and we are questioning him. Investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that led to the girl’s death,” said a police official.
As per reports, Prakriti, a Nepali national, was found dead at the hostel campus of the university last night triggering high tension in the premises of the educational institution.
She was reportedly in a relationship with Advik for the last three years. However, their relationship took a downturn when the boy received a job offer and relocated, which led to a misunderstanding between the couple.
The incident sparked widespread outrage among students, with many taking to the streets to demand justice for the deceased.
Following the incident, the university's Registrar's office issued a notice directing all Nepali students to vacate the campus.
“The university is closed sine die for all international students from Nepal. They are hereby directed to vacate the university campus immediately on 17th February, 2025,” the notice read.
