Bhubaneswar, Aug 11: The two regional transport offices (RTOs) in Bhubaneswar have fined owners of 75 bikes
having private registration, for commercial use.
The bikes have been registered under online taxi services like OLA, RAPIDO, and UBER.
"The owners have been fined Rs 5,000 each for violating Section 92 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988," said Bikash Choudhury, RTO - I.
The use of yellow number plates is mandatory for vehicles used for commercial purposes. However, hundreds of bikes are used for commercial purposes in the city having white number plates. As many as 10 bikes are found in the city having yellow number plates, he added.
The enforcement team has launched a special drive to find out private bikes used for commercial purposes. The RTO charges only Rs 1,500 for a change of number plate. Owners can change it easily to avoid a hefty amount of penalty, he said.
Bhubaneswar-based auto-rickshaw associations have been demanding action against the bike owners.
