The Salman starred movie Sikandar is gearing up for a grand Eid release.
Amidst the Sikandar buzz growing louder director AR Murugadoss has shared his experience working with Salman Khan.
The filmmaker, who has directed South Indian stars like Rajnikanth, Vijay, Suriya, and Mahesh Babu, admits that working with Bollywood superstar comes with creative compromises.
MURUGADOSS ON SIKANDAR BIRTH
In an interview with PTI, Murugadoss revealed how he got Salman on board. Their first meeting happened on the sets of Holiday at Madh Island.
The ace director recalled, “I went and said hello. Then I said – I want to make a film with you. He replied – Even, I want to do a film with you.”
Years later, Salman Khan approached Murugadoss for a Korean film remake, but he refused.
He told Salman, “I don’t want to do it. If I want to do a film with you, it has to be something which I want to write myself.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, producer Sajid Nadiadwala contacted Murugadoss as he was looking for a strong script. After months of development, the director pitched Sikandar to Salman at his Galaxy apartment in Mumbai.
After hearing the script, Salman took a big puff and took a stroll that confused Murugadoss.
“Within 30 minutes of the narration, he walked away a bit, smoked, and then asked, ‘Do you know how I work?’ I said, ‘No.’ He replied, ‘I work from 2 pm to 2 am and are you okay with it?’ I was like, ‘This means he liked the script,’” Murugadoss shared.
SALMAN A TOUGH STAR
Talking with PTI, Murugadoss admitted that directing Salman has not always been easy. They often had different ideas about scenes.
Murugadoss said, “When we couldn’t come to a conclusion, we would shoot both ways and then decide during the edit.”
He also explained that working with a superstar requires adjustments.
The director added, “When you are working with superstars, you cannot be 100 percent true to the script. We’ve to compromise for the audience, for the fan base, for the opening. We cannot go with being 100 percent genuine as a director. We’ve to satisfy the fans and think about them. It is difficult to be in that zone.”
Notwithstanding challenges, the ace director believes Sikandar has everything needed for a blockbuster. The action-packed film is all set to hit cinemas on March 30.
