Amazon is set to enforce new password-sharing rules for its Prime members in India, effective January 2025. Under the revised policy, Prime members will only be able to sign in on a maximum of five devices, which includes up to two televisions.
The company stated, “As part of your Prime membership, you and your household are entitled to enjoy Prime Video on up to five devices. Starting January 2025, this entitlement will include a maximum of two TVs. You can manage your devices via the Settings page or purchase an additional Prime membership to access more devices.”
Currently, Prime members can log in on up to 10 devices, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, and TVs. The reduction to five devices aims to curb password sharing, a step previously taken by Netflix, which saw a boost in subscriber growth following its implementation.
Amazon has also provided a 30-day grace period for existing members to deregister or replace up to two devices before the new rules come into effect.
The move has stirred concerns among users who pay ₹1,499 annually for a subscription that includes Prime Video, Amazon Music, free deliveries, and other benefits.
Amazon’s subscription plans in India start at ₹299 per month, ₹599 quarterly, and ₹1,499 annually. Additional options include the Annual Prime Lite plan at ₹799 and the Prime Shopping Edition for ₹399 per year.
With these changes, Amazon aims to streamline its services while ensuring household exclusivity for its premium content.
