A plane so unique to it's named after a whale. It's the Airbus Beluga XL, a super transporter that recently made a historic landing at Kolkata International Airport. This marked the first time this colossal aircraft, known for its distinctive whale-like shape, has graced the tarmac in Kolkata.
The Beluga XL, originating from Airbus's headquarters in Toulouse, France, is on a mission to deliver essential aircraft components to Tianjin, China. With its massive cargo hold, the Beluga XL plays a vital role in Airbus's global supply chain, transporting wings, fuselage sections, and other large parts for the assembly of other Airbus aircraft.
Due to its size and specific operational needs, Kolkata International Airport was the only suitable location in eastern India for the Beluga XL to make a "technical stop." This stop allowed the crew to rest in compliance with Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL), which are crucial for ensuring aviation safety by preventing pilot fatigue. The stop also allowed for refueling before the aircraft continued its journey to China.
The Beluga XL is the successor to the original Beluga ST (Super Transporter), which was based on the Airbus A300-600ST. While the Beluga ST was a marvel in its own right, the Beluga XL, derived from the larger A330-743L, offers even greater capacity and efficiency. Its cargo hold is 30% larger than its predecessor, allowing it to carry even larger components, such as two A350 XWB wings simultaneously!
The Beluga XL's arrival in Kolkata was a momentous occasion, capturing the attention of aviation enthusiasts and the general public alike. Kolkata Airport proved it can handle any aircraft like the extraordinary Beluga XL.
