Bhubaneswar, Nov 26: Nandankanan Zoological Park in Odisha’s Bhubaneswar has recently received 11 different species from Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad. The exchange took place on Monday as part of the first phase of a programme approved by the Central Zoo Authority, New Delhi.
As part of the exchange, Nandankanan Zoo welcomed a diverse range of animals and birds, including two sarus cranes, two spoonbills, two grey jungle fowls, two iguanas, two barbary doves, four hog deer, two mouse deer, two red sand boas, two common sand boas, two bonnet macaques, and two Russell’s vipers.
In return, the Nandankanan Zoo sent a variety of exotic species to the Nehru Zoo, including three Siamese crocodiles, four golden pheasants, two Lady Amherst’s pheasants, two hog deer, and two mouse deer.
This collaborative effort marks a significant milestone in wildlife conservation, with both zoos aiming to raise public awareness and promote educational initiatives. By introducing such rare and diverse species, the exchange programme seeks to enhance understanding of biodiversity and lesser-known animals.
The second phase of the programme will involve Nandankanan Zoo receiving two female bonnet macaques in exchange for an Asian Open Bill Stork and Assamese macaque, further strengthening this important conservation partnership.
