Bhubaneswar, Dec 11: In the last two years, the Odisha government has cracked down on five jewellery shops that were selling fake gold under the guise of Hallmark certification.
These violations were exposed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which resulted in fines and legal action.
Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra revealed this in the Legislative Assembly today while replying to MLA Bibhuti Bhusan Balabantaray's question.
Four additional stores in Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Sambalpur, and Bargarh have had their licenses canceled, and a case against Ambika Jewellers in Sambalpur is pending.
Weighing devices in jewelry stores are routinely inspected by 72 state-run laboratories to safeguard customers. Certified electronic scales are used, and district metrology officers make surprise raids and apply fines as needed. Enhancing oversight is the goal of a task force proposal at the state level.
These actions show how dedicated the government is to preventing anomalies and guaranteeing ethical conduct in the gold trade.
