The severe cyclonic system’s maximum sustained wind measured today post intensification by the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC) has estimated the top speed at 111kmph and the gusting wind speed is measured at 138kmph. The national weather forecaster IMD has predicted the top speed at 110kmph and gusting at 120kmph.
The satellite wind measurement data released by JTWC shows Cyclone Dana is gusting higher than estimated by IMD wind speed.
CYCLONE DANA TOP WIND SPEED NEARING ODISHA?
The wind radii measured over all its quadrant shows, the top wind speed of Cyclone Dana is nowhere around the Odisha coasts as on midday of October 24. As Cyclone Dana is over 230 km away from the landfall place, the wind over the districts in the eye of the storm – Kendrapada, Bhadrak and Jagatsinghpur – is yet to turn into a gale.
The big reason is the packing speed of 92kmph of Cyclone Dana is being measured only up to around 83 km to its northeast and south east, and around 74km to its southeast and southwest.
However, the low windspeed of Cyclone Dana @60kmph is spread over 176km to the southeast, southwest and northwest of the Cyclone Dana’s centre. The 60kmph speed is encompassing 212km to the northeast of the system’s centre.
WHEN GALE TO TAKE OVER KENDRAPADA, JAGATSINGHPUR, BHADRAK?
Based on the current pace of severe Cyclone Dana, it can be predicted that by tonight (10pm onwards), gale wind speed of 92kmph to sweep the coastal areas of Kendrapada, Bhadrak and Jagatsinghpur.
And as the midnight sets in, around 60kmph wind may take the twin city into grip, when Cyclone Dana would be just 175-190km away from Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

The national weather and cyclone forecaster IMD has today issued wind warning for the State of Odisha. The IMD warning hoists the following wind warning for Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
- Bhubaneswar: From midnight onwards 50-60kmph wind gusting 70kmph
