In late 2018, the #MeToo movement gained traction in Bollywood, but concerns over harassment in the industry date back much further. In the year 1949, a young Lata Mangeshkar confronted and boycotted fellow playback singer G.M. Durrani after he made inappropriate behaviour during the recording of the duet ‘Hey Chore Ki Jaat Badi Bewafa’ for the film ‘Chandni Raat.’
At just 21 years old, Lataji firmly responded to Durrani’s untoward behaviour, later recalling the incident in an interview. Despite some historical records suggesting otherwise, she maintained that she never sang a duet with Durrani again, standing by her principles and the values instilled by her family.
Lata Mangeshkar garnered immense recognition for her remarkable contributions to the music industry. Beginning her singing journey at the young age of five on September 28, 1929, she lent her voice to songs in over thirty Indian languages. The legendary singer passed away on February 6, 2022, leaving behind a rich musical legacy.
