New Delhi, April 23: In a strong response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam with suspected cross-border links, India has decided to suspend the Indus Water Treaty and downgrade its diplomatic engagement with Pakistan, including the expulsion of Pakistani military attachés.
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, convened on Wednesday evening to finalize the country’s response to the incident.
Following the meeting, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced that the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty would be put on hold with immediate effect. The suspension will remain until Pakistan takes credible and irreversible steps to cease its support for cross-border terrorism, he stated at a press briefing.
