Bhubaneswar/ New Delhi, December 30: Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, former Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court, has assumed charge as a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India, alongside Justice V. Ramasubramanian, the former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, who has taken over as the Chairperson of the Commission.
Born on July 20, 1962, in Nayagarh district, Odisha, Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi is a distinguished legal expert renowned for his remarkable contributions to Indian jurisprudence. He holds an LLB and LLM from MS Law College, Cuttack, and earned a PhD in Law from Sambalpur University.
Justice Sarangi began his legal career in 1985, practicing civil, criminal, constitutional, and administrative law for over 27 years. He gained recognition for his exemplary work and was honored with the prestigious "Haricharan Mukherjee Memorial Award" with a Gold Medal in 2002.
In 2013, Justice Sarangi was appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Orissa High Court, where he significantly impacted the judicial system, disposing of over 152,000 cases and authoring nearly 1,500 judgments. In July 2024, he took on the role of Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
Throughout his career, Justice Sarangi has contributed to numerous legal and administrative committees, including the Odisha State Legal Services Authority and the Juvenile Justice Committee. He is also an active member of several national and international legal organizations.
