Prayagraj (UP), January 5: As the countdown to the Maha Kumbh Mela draws closer, religious celebrations are in full swing across Prayagraj, especially at the Sangam—the sacred confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. In preparation for the grand event, the Kinnar Akhara, a prominent religious sect, performed a special fire ritual (Havan) to seek divine blessings for the safety and smoothness of the upcoming celebrations.
Mahamandaleshwar Kaushalya Nand Giri of Kinnar Akhara led the Havan, praying for the safety of the devotees attending the Kumbh Mela. He emphasized that the ritual, conducted with mustard seeds, was dedicated to Maa Baglamukhi, one of the 10 Mahavidyas, known for her powers of protection. “Maha Kumbh will be a grand occasion, and we performed this Havan for the safety of the people coming to participate. We prayed to Maa Baglamukhi for the Kumbh to remain divine, grand, and safe. The government is working hard to accommodate around 40 crore people, and we prayed for their safe journey to and from the Kumbh,” Kaushalya Nand Giri said.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is expected to draw a staggering 40 crore people, making crowd management a critical concern for the authorities. Speaking on the preparations, Shashikant Tripathi, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of North Central Railway, shared, "The Civil Administration has estimated that approximately 40 crore people will visit Prayagraj during the Kumbh Mela. Effective crowd management is our biggest challenge."
To ensure smooth and safe transportation for the pilgrims, the North Central Railway has outlined a comprehensive plan, including a one-way movement strategy to prevent congestion and chaos. Passengers will be directed to designated 'Yatri-Kendras' before proceeding to their respective platforms to streamline the flow of people.
Alongside these logistical preparations, several unique personalities have emerged as the center of attention, showcasing their individual talents and contributions to the religious atmosphere. Among them is Mahant Om, also known as "E-rickshaw Baba," who made headlines with his 13-day journey from Delhi to Prayagraj in a customized electric rickshaw. His arrival has sparked interest and admiration, adding a modern twist to the traditional event.
The Maha Kumbh Mela held once every 12 years, is set to take place from January 13 to February 26, attracting a massive influx of devotees. To mitigate potential risks and ensure the safety of the public, the district administration has implemented strict measures, especially regarding crowd management and fire safety.
The main bathing rituals, known as the Shahi Snan (royal baths), are scheduled for January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), and February 3 (Basant Panchami). These key events will see the convergence of millions of pilgrims seeking spiritual purification and blessings at the sacred confluence of the rivers.
