A day of leisure turned into tragedy off the coast of Mumbai on Wednesday when a ferry carrying passengers from the Elephanta Islands collided with a Navy speedboat. The incident, which occurred near the iconic Gateway of India, left two people dead and several others missing, casting a somber shadow over the bustling city.
A collision with devastating consequences:
The ferry, "Neelkamal," was en route to the Gateway of India, carrying 110 passengers who had spent the day exploring the historic Elephanta Caves. As the vessel neared its destination, a Navy speedboat, reportedly undergoing engine trials, lost control and rammed into the ferry, causing it to capsize. The suddenness of the incident plunged the passengers into chaos and fear as they were thrown into the choppy waters.
Rescue efforts and aftermath:
A massive rescue operation was swiftly launched, involving multiple agencies and resources. Eleven Navy boats, three Marine Police boats, a Coast Guard vessel, and four helicopters were deployed to the scene. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority also provided assistance, and local fishermen joined the desperate search for survivors.
Despite the valiant efforts, thirteen lives were lost in the tragedy. Of the total of 101 people rescued, four remain in critical condition. Video footage captured the dramatic scenes of passengers, clad in life jackets, being pulled from the water and transferred to safety.
Investigating the cause:
Navy sources indicate that the speedboat involved was a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) undergoing engine trials. Preliminary findings suggest that a problem with the engine may have led to the loss of control and the subsequent collision. A thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident and to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety protocols and vigilance, even in seemingly routine operations. The loss of life and the trauma experienced by the survivors underscore the need for continuous improvement in maritime safety measures. As authorities work to determine the precise cause of the collision, the focus remains on providing support to the victims and their families, while ensuring the safety of those who travel on Mumbai's waterways.
