Kendrapara, Apr 29: Owing to the breeding season of saltwater crocodiles, Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha’s Kendrapara district will be closed to tourists from May 1 to July 31.
It was confirmed by Assistant Chief Conservator of Forests (ACF) Manas Das today.
The Forest Department has implemented several measures to safeguard the breeding grounds. Additionally, forest guards have been directed to closely monitor the mother crocodiles, he added.
Local villagers have been advised to refrain from entering Bhitarkanika to collect forest produce during this period.
"Female crocodiles tend to become more aggressive during the breeding season, and the majority of crocodile attacks occur at this time," said the ACF.
According to the latest census report, Bhitarkanika is home to 1,826 saltwater crocodiles.
In 2024, the national park recorded a total of 114 nesting sites.
"A mother crocodile typically lays between 50 to 60 eggs and remains on guard until they hatch," said the ACF.
