Sambalpur, Ap 18: In a remarkable initiative rooted in compassion and service, Odisha's doctor couple, Dr Shankar Ramchandani and Dr Sikha Ramchandani, have joined forces to extend their affordable healthcare mission to the underserved in Sambalpur charging just one rupee per patient.

Dr Shankar, an Assistant Professor at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), launched his now-renowned ‘One Rupee Clinic’ in 2021, offering medical consultations to the underprivileged during evening hours.

Over the years, his initiative has brought relief to thousands who struggle to afford basic healthcare.

Inspired by her husband’s unwavering commitment, Dr Sikha Ramchandani, a qualified dentist and former practitioner at the Railway Hospital, has now established a low-cost dental clinic near VIMSAR.

With Rs 3 lakh drawn from her personal savings, the clinic provides services such as tooth fillings, cleaning, and extractions treatments typically out of reach for those in poverty.

Operating for three hours every morning, the dental clinic aims to fill a critical gap in accessible oral healthcare in the region.

Speaking about her decision, Dr Sikha said, “I was deeply moved by Shankar’s work and wanted to contribute in my own way. Dental care is often neglected because of high costs, and I wanted to change that.”

Together, the Ramchandanis are not just healing ailments they are restoring dignity and hope to countless lives.

Their united mission underscores the power of empathy and the profound impact of small yet meaningful gestures. One patient at a time, and one rupee at a time, they are reshaping community healthcare in Sambalpur.
