Bhubaneswar, February 20: The Odisha government has planned to construct 16 dams and 15 barrages along the Mahanadi River. This initiative aims to ensure sustainable water management and equitable distribution of Mahanadi's waters for the state's development.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi shared this update with the state assembly on Thursday.
In a written response to a question from BJD legislator Ranendra Pratap Swain, the chief minister explained that the flow of water to Odisha’s downstream areas is gradually decreasing, particularly near the Hirakud Dam, due to the unplanned excess use of water in the upstream Mahanadi basin by Chhattisgarh.
He added that in response to this issue, the Odisha government has turned to the Mahanadi Water Dispute Tribunal and submitted its claims, which are currently under legal review.
