Bhubaneswar, Mar 13: In a bid to elevate Odisha’s iconic summer delicacy, the state government has urged Odia communities across 22 countries to celebrate Pakhala Dibasa in a grand manner on March 20.
In an official communication to Odia organizations in the US, UK, Australia, Japan, Dubai, Singapore, and other nations, Director of Culture and Odisha Paribar, Bijay Ketan Upadhayay, encouraged expatriates to popularise Pakhala – Odisha’s traditional fermented rice dish – on a global scale.
The initiative calls for Odias worldwide to share photos, videos, and stories of their Pakhala platters on social media, tagging the Odisha government to amplify its reach. The goal is to turn Pakhala into a globally recognised dish, much like sushi or kimchi, by showcasing its cooling, nutritious, and cultural significance.
Since 2015, Pakhala Dibasa has been celebrated to honour Odisha’s age-old food tradition. The dish, typically served with curd, fried or mashed vegetables, and a variety of accompaniments, is a staple in Odia households, particularly during the sweltering summer months.
Now, the state government envisions taking it beyond Odisha’s borders, encouraging Odias abroad to make it a global food movement.
