Bhubaneswar, Apr 6: In a tragic incident, one person was killed and more than 20 passengers sustained serious injuries after a bus carrying Bangladeshi tourists overturned near Uttara on the Bhubaneswar-Puri National Highway in the wee hours of Sunday.
As per reports, around 100 pilgrims from Bangladesh’s Chittagong had arrived in India on March 17 in two buses. The group included several senior citizens and at least 17 children.
After visiting significant pilgrimage sites like Ayodhya and Dwarka, they were heading to Puri to seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath.
However, the mishap occurred at around 3 AM today when the driver of one of the buses reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to swerve off the road and plunge into a roadside ditch.
All the injured were immediately rushed to Capital Hospital for treatment.
However, tragedy struck again when one of the ambulances transporting the injured crashed into the parapet of an over-bridge near Shishu Bhavan Square.
As a result of the impact, the passengers inside the ambulance reportedly sustained additional injuries.
Further investigation into the matter was underway.
